A week ago, Nigerian youths started the #endsars movement on Twitter which culminated into active protests over the week till date. SARS which stands for Special anti robbery squad is charged with the responsibility of combating robbery and armed robbery but has according to Nigerian youths have over the years extorted, harassed, and killed innocent Nigerian youths whom they profile “Yahoo boys”.
Female Nigerian youths aren’t left out of this seemingly ruthless act as so many livid testimonies of some ladies of their encounter and experience confirm that indeed they’ve had a horrible taste of rape, extortion and near murder in the hands of SARS.
Many Nigerian celebrities took to their social media platforms to condemn the violent act of SARS as well as police brutality. Many Nigerian youths took to twitter to solicit the support of many international acts in the #endsars protest. International acts like Kanye west, P Diddy, Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford joined the movement by tweeting the hashtag end SARS.
Award winning gospel artist Kirk Franklin also joined the movement as he via Instagram posted a picture of a protestor with a placard that read:. “Police is stealing from the youth” with the caption: “for over 20 years, Nigeria has stood with me, now I stand with you. #endsars”. Well meaning Nigerians took to Franklin’s comment section to lavish praise and thanks on the singer.
Sonnie Badu, Sammie okposo and Ada have actively and aggressively been speaking up and supoorting the #endsarsmovement in series of tweets and Instagram posts.
If there is one thing about christian acts joining and supporting the movement that you’ll love to see, it has to be Limoblaze, “okay” crooner organizing and leading an #endsars prayer walk protest and it has got the whole world talking.
Although, the inspector general of the Nigerian police force has disbanded SARS, the proposed reform doesn’t sit well with Nigerians who are of the opinion that the force has the intention to re-brand the security outfit.
